Furniture Fit Checker

Enter the space you have and the piece you want. The checker adds the room to open its drawers or doors and to stand or sit in front of it, then tells you if it fits, and the largest piece that would.

Short answer

A piece fits when it fits the space and you can still use it: its depth, plus the room its drawers or doors take to open, plus the room to stand or sit in front, has to fit the depth you have. An 18″-deep dresser with 16″ drawers needs 18 + 16 + 18 = 52″ from the wall: 34″ in front of it, the figure our Clearance Checker uses.

Starting values only: change them to your piece. A drawer’s pull-out is usually a little less than the dresser’s depth; a wardrobe door swings out as far as the door is wide.

How to measure

  • The space: the width and the depth of the clear floor, from the wall to whatever is opposite: the bed, another piece of furniture or the walking route you want to keep.
  • The piece: its outside width and depth at the widest point, handles and trim included.
  • The moving parts: how far a drawer pulls out, or how far a door swings out from the front.

When it fits but you can’t use it

The checker answers two questions separately: does the closed piece fit, and does it fit with the space to use it. A dresser that fits closed but leaves less than the drawer’s pull-out plus a place to stand is the most common mistake in a small bedroom. The checker then works backwards and gives the largest width and depth that would fit with the same allowances, so you can shop within them.

It checks the place the piece will stand, not the way in. For doors, halls and stairs, use Will it fit through the door?, and for a whole room, the room planner.
